In this guide
- A gateway is a ready-made pipe from your site to one platform. A server container is a tracking server that talks to many platforms.
- Gateways win on speed to launch. A container wins on control, cookies and coverage.
- If you advertise on one platform, a gateway can be enough. Once you use two or more, a container is usually cheaper in the long run.
"Gateway" is now a word used by Meta, Google and several hosting companies, and they do not all mean the same thing. This page defines the ones you will meet, compares them with a Google Tag Manager server container and gives you a way to decide. Read the explainers on Google tag gateway and Meta's gateways for the single-vendor details.
The gateways you will meet
| Name | Made by | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Conversions API Gateway | Meta | Runs a server that sends your web pixel events to Meta as server events |
| Signals Gateway | Meta | A data hub for web, app, offline and CRM data, routed to Meta and other destinations |
| Google tag gateway for advertisers | Serves the Google tag from your own domain through a CDN or load balancer | |
| Host-made gateways | Hosting companies | Simplified set-ups that send events to one or two platforms without a full container |
Watch events arrive, live

What a server container adds
Many platforms from one place
One container can feed GA4, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, your CRM and a webhook at the same time.
Cookies from your domain
The server can set and refresh cookies, and a tool such as Open Tracked's Cookie Keeper can restore them for returning visitors.
Data control
Transformations and variables let you remove, add and hash fields for each vendor. See transformations.
Events from anywhere
Webhooks, backends and CRMs can send events too, not only the browser.
What gateways do better
- Speed. A gateway can be live in an afternoon with no Tag Manager knowledge.
- Simplicity. There are fewer moving parts to learn.
- Vendor support. Meta and Google maintain their own gateways.
Brands that grow on cleaner data
Stores and agencies use Open Tracked to see which ads earn the sale.
Where gateways run out
- They focus on one platform. A second platform means a second tool.
- You get little or no control over what is removed or added.
- They do not set long-lived cookies from your own domain.
- Offline events and CRM stages usually need a separate route.
Cost and effort compared
| Gateway | Server container on a managed host | Server container on your own cloud | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Hours | Hours, with a wizard | A day or more |
| Monthly cost | Platform server or CDN charges | A plan fee, sized by requests (see the pricing page) | Cloud instances, often about $45 each, usually two or three |
| Skills needed | Low | Low to medium | Medium to high |
| Platforms covered | One | Many | Many |
| Ongoing work | Watch the server and the platform settings | Little | Updates, scaling, monitoring |
Where Open Tracked sits
Open Tracked is a managed host for the server container. You do not build a Google Cloud account or manage instances. Plans are sized by monthly requests: Free covers 15,000, Pro 500,000, Business 2 million, Business+ 10 million and Enterprise 20 million. Cookie Keeper, the Data Store, the Enricher, File Proxy, Bot Detection, Visitor Location and the other data power-ups are on every plan. We do not sell a Meta-only gateway; the server container is the product.
How to choose
- you advertise on one platform
- nobody on the team can learn Tag Manager
- you want a result this week and will review later
- you advertise on two or more platforms
- you need control over the data each vendor sees
- you want long-lived first-party cookies
- you will send offline or CRM events
A gateway-to-container migration in five steps
Keep the gateway running
Do not switch it off first. You want continuous data while you test.
Set up the container on a test subdomain
Import the web and server containers and send test events only.
Use the same event IDs
Make sure the container sends the same event_id values as the gateway, so any overlap is deduplicated.
Compare for a week
Compare event counts in the platform with the gateway alone and with the container.
Switch the main domain and turn off the gateway
Point your main tagging subdomain to the container and disable the gateway sending.
Scenarios
| Team | Platforms | Sensible route |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder, Meta ads only | Meta | Meta gateway or a container; a gateway is fine to start |
| Store with Meta and Google ads | Meta, Google | Server container, with the Google tag served from your domain |
| Brand with Meta, Google, TikTok and a CRM | Four or more | Server container with CRM offline conversions |
| Agency | Many, per client | One container per client on a managed host |

Frequently asked questions
Is a server container better than a gateway?
It does more, and covers more platforms, but it takes more set-up unless the host gives you a wizard. For one platform a gateway can be enough.
Can I use a gateway and a server container together?
Technically yes, but sending the same event through both creates duplicates unless the event IDs match. Most teams choose one route per platform.
Do gateways set longer-lived cookies?
Generally not. Cookie lifetime is mostly a server container feature.
What does a managed host save me?
The Google Cloud account, instance sizing, updates and domain set-up. You get a ready container and support.
Is a gateway cheaper?
It can be at small scale. As you add platforms, several gateways can cost more than one container.
Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?
No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.
Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?
No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source
Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
