In this guide
- The Open Tracked MCP server is free and open source, and runs on your own computer.
- It lets Claude, Cursor or any MCP app read and change your Open Tracked containers and your Google Tag Manager.
- You use your own token and key. Nothing is published unless you do it.
What is the Model Context Protocol?
MCP is an open standard that lets an AI app use tools outside the chat. An MCP server is a small program that offers those tools. Your AI app starts it, asks what it can do, and calls it when your question needs it.
This server runs on your own computer. It talks to Open Tracked with a token you create and to Google Tag Manager with a key you create. Nothing goes through a third party.
What can it do?
open_tracked_containersSee your containers
List every container, or open one to see its plan, usage and domains.
open_tracked_domainsManage domains
List, add or remove the tracking subdomains of a container.
open_tracked_tracking_scoreRead your tracking score
A score from 0 to 100 and the checks behind it: server, own subdomain, CDN, Custom Loader, Cookie Keeper and events.
open_tracked_power_upsSwitch power-ups
See which power-ups are on and turn one on or off.
open_tracked_gtm_packBuild the Tag Manager files
Make the web and server containers for a shop, as two JSON files.
open_tracked_install_gtm_packInstall them in one request
Put the whole pack into Tag Manager as a new workspace. Nothing is published.
Needs Google keygtm_* · 20 toolsThe whole Tag Manager API
Tags, triggers, variables, templates, versions and publishing. Anything you can click in Tag Manager, your assistant can do.
What can you ask it?
Plain sentences work. Good first requests:

Why use it?
One request, not an afternoon
Tag Manager has no “import container” button. Normally you import two files, then check every tag, variable and trigger by hand. Here you ask once and the whole Open Tracked setup appears in a new workspace, ready to review.
Both sides in one chat
Ask why your tracking score is low, get the answer from Open Tracked, then fix what is missing in Tag Manager. Same conversation, no switching windows, no copying values between tabs.
Nothing publishes itself
The server runs on your computer with your own token and key. It can build and prepare, but the last click is always yours: you open the workspace, look, and publish when you are happy.
Set up in five steps
Get the server and build it
You need Node.js 20 or newer and Git. Run these once:
git clone https://github.com/OpenTracked-io/open-tracked-mcp.git
cd open-tracked-mcp
npm install && npm run buildCreate an Open Tracked token
In Open Tracked open Settings, MCP, press Create token, name it (for example after your computer) and copy it at once. It is shown one time.
Add the server to your AI app
Open Settings, Developer, Edit Config and add this (your own path and token):
{
"mcpServers": {
"open-tracked": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/path/to/open-tracked-mcp/dist/index.js"],
"env": {
"OPEN_TRACKED_URL": "https://app.opentracked.io",
"OPEN_TRACKED_TOKEN": "paste your token here"
}
}
}
}Run once in a terminal:
claude mcp add open-tracked \
-e OPEN_TRACKED_URL=https://app.opentracked.io \
-e OPEN_TRACKED_TOKEN=your-token \
-- node /path/to/open-tracked-mcp/dist/index.jsOpen Settings, MCP, Add new MCP server (or edit ~/.cursor/mcp.json) and use the same block as for Claude Desktop:
{
"mcpServers": {
"open-tracked": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/path/to/open-tracked-mcp/dist/index.js"],
"env": {
"OPEN_TRACKED_URL": "https://app.opentracked.io",
"OPEN_TRACKED_TOKEN": "paste your token here"
}
}
}
}Restart your AI app and check it
Quit the app completely and open it again. In Claude Desktop, Developer lists open-tracked as running. In Claude Code run claude mcp list: it should say Connected. Then ask:
List my Open Tracked containers and tell me the tracking score of the first one.Optional: connect Google Tag Manager
- In Google Cloud enable the Tag Manager API, create a service account and download a JSON key.
- In Tag Manager, Admin, User management, add the service account's e-mail with Edit rights, for the web container and the server container.
- Add the key to the server settings, one more line in the same block as step 3:
{
"mcpServers": {
"open-tracked": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/path/to/open-tracked-mcp/dist/index.js"],
"env": {
"OPEN_TRACKED_URL": "https://app.opentracked.io",
"OPEN_TRACKED_TOKEN": "paste your token here",
"GOOGLE_SERVICE_ACCOUNT_KEY": "{ ...the service account key JSON, on one line... }"
}
}
}
}Restart your AI app. The Tag Manager tools now show up.
Put the Open Tracked tags into Tag Manager
With Google connected, ask in plain words:
Install the Open Tracked GTM pack for container 12 into my Tag Manager: account 123456, web container 7890123, server container 7890456. Do a dry run first.- Creates a new workspace in your web container and one in your server container.
- Nothing existing is touched and nothing is published. You get links to both workspaces: look, then publish.
- Ask for a dry run first to see the plan before anything is created.
Is it safe?
- The server runs on your computer. Open Tracked never receives your Google key.
- The token only reaches your own containers. Another account's container answers “not found”.
- Your container's API key and billing details are never handed to the assistant.
- Meta and TikTok tokens you give the pack tools are used to build the files and are not stored by Open Tracked.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Open Tracked MCP server?
It is a free, open-source program that runs on your own computer. It lets an AI assistant such as Claude or Cursor read and change your Open Tracked containers and your Google Tag Manager, using your own token and key.
Is the Open Tracked MCP server free?
Yes. It is included with every Open Tracked account and the source code is open on GitHub. You only need Node.js 20 or newer and an AI app that supports MCP.
Which AI apps work with it?
Any app that supports MCP servers, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor. Step 3 shows the settings for each.
Does Open Tracked see my Google key?
No. The server runs on your computer and talks to Google Tag Manager directly. Open Tracked never receives your Google service account key.
Does it publish changes to my Tag Manager by itself?
No. The install tool creates a new workspace in your web container and one in your server container and returns links. Nothing existing is touched and nothing is published until you do it.
Does it work without Google credentials?
Yes. Without them the Open Tracked tools work: containers, domains, the tracking score, power-ups and the GTM pack files. Add a Google service account for the Tag Manager tools and the one-request install.
Want to start on the server side?
Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, fixes tracking at the source and shows what each ad is really worth.
