In this guide
- Meta's delivery learns from conversion events. Good event quality and enough volume matter most.
- Keep a simple structure, test creative in a controlled way and use value optimisation where margins differ.
- Review weekly, not hourly.
Most Facebook ad problems are not about targeting tricks. They are about signals, volume and creative. This page lists the levers in order of impact. Meta renames and changes its options often, so check Ads Manager for current labels. See Facebook tracking, Facebook ads attribution and Meta profit-based optimisation.
1. Event quality
- Send purchases and leads from the server with a shared event ID, hashed customer data,
fbpandfbc. See Meta Conversions API. - Check event match quality and diagnostics. See event match quality.
- Optimise for the event closest to value that has enough volume.
Connected in minutes
Add your domain, install the pixel, connect your ad platforms and watch the first events land.
2. Volume and the learning phase
Meta's delivery system needs enough optimisation events to learn. A common guideline is around 50 optimisation events per ad set in a week to exit the learning phase. If you cannot reach it, consolidate ad sets, or optimise for an earlier event with more volume. Avoid frequent edits, which restart learning.
3. Structure
| Principle | Practice |
|---|---|
| Fewer, larger ad sets | Concentrates conversions so each learns faster |
| Broad targeting with good signals | Let delivery find buyers; test against narrow |
| Separate prospecting and retargeting | Different budgets and goals |
| Exclude recent buyers from prospecting | Stop paying to reach existing customers |
Works with your stack
Grab a logo and throw it. These are the tools Open Tracked already talks to.

4. Creative
- Test several concepts, not small variations of one.
- Change one variable at a time inside a test.
- Use native formats: vertical video, short and sound-optional.
- Refresh before fatigue. See ad fatigue.
5. Value optimisation
If margins vary, optimise for value, and consider sending profit as the value. See Meta profit-based optimisation.
6. Budgets
Raise budgets in steps of about 20 percent, not doubles, so delivery adjusts. Give changes several days before judging.
7. Frequency and audiences
Watch frequency in prospecting. Refresh audiences from customer lists. See Facebook custom audiences.
A weekly routine
- Check event diagnostics and match quality.
- Compare Meta purchases with store orders.
- Review creative: pause losers, scale winners, add new concepts.
- Check budget and learning status.
- Note changes and results.
A realistic example
A store runs eight ad sets for a single product, each with a small budget, and none exits the learning phase. It consolidates into two ad sets with broader targeting, raises the budget in two steps and sends purchases from the server with hashed e-mail so that Meta sees more conversions. Within two weeks both ad sets are out of the learning phase, cost per purchase falls and results become steadier. The team also changes its habits: it no longer edits ads daily, and it reviews the account once a week with a short checklist. Most of the improvement came from giving the system more signal and more stability, not from clever settings.

Frequently asked questions
How do I optimise Facebook ads?
Improve event quality, reach enough conversions, keep structure simple, test creative and review weekly.
What is the learning phase?
The period when Meta's delivery learns. A common guideline is around 50 optimisation events per ad set in a week.
Does broad targeting work?
Often, with good conversion signals. Test it against narrow audiences.
How much should I raise budgets?
About 20 percent at a time.
How do server events help optimisation?
They give Meta more complete and better-matched conversions to learn from.
Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?
No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.
Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?
No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source
Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
