Key takeaways
  • Google publishes an open-source MCP server for the Google Ads API. It is read-only and described as experimental.
  • It needs a developer token, OAuth credentials and a Google Cloud project.
  • Use it for audits and questions, not for changes, and check results in the interface.

Google Ads accounts hold more data than anyone reads. An assistant that can query it in plain language is a useful analyst: "which campaigns spent more than $500 last month with no conversions?" This page explains what the Google Ads MCP server offers, how to think about access, and its limits. Google's MCP server documentation is the source of truth for installation. See also Google Ads conversion tracking and AI controls for Tag Manager.

What it is

The server implements the Model Context Protocol on top of the Google Ads API. Reported tools include listing accessible customer accounts and running queries in Google Ads Query Language (GAQL). Google describes the initial version as read-only and meant for diagnostics and analytics. It is experimental and not an officially supported product, so expect changes.

A sample feed. In Open Tracked you see the same stream for your own store.

Set-up outline

1

Get API access

A Google Ads developer token, a Google Cloud project and OAuth credentials.

2

Prepare credentials

A configuration file with your credentials, kept private.

3

Install the server

As in Google's documentation.

4

Add it to the assistant's configuration

With the paths and environment variables it needs.

5

Start with a small query

For example, list accessible accounts.

Useful questions

  • Which campaigns had spend above a threshold and no conversions last month?
  • Which keywords have a high cost per conversion and low impression share?
  • Which ad groups have disapproved ads?
  • How does conversion value by campaign compare month on month?
  • Which conversion actions are not recording?

Brands that grow on cleaner data

Stores and agencies use Open Tracked to see which ads earn the sale.

Safe use

01

Read-only

Keep the server read-only. Changes should go through the interface or reviewed tools.

02

Credentials

Treat the developer token and OAuth tokens as secrets.

03

Manager accounts

Use the narrowest access that covers the accounts you need.

04

Verify

Check key numbers in the interface before acting.

Limits

  • It sees what Google Ads recorded. If conversions are missing because of tracking gaps, the answers will be wrong in the same way. See conversion tracking FAQ.
  • It does not know your profit or your store's orders.
  • It is experimental. Expect rough edges.

Join it with tracking and profit

The most valuable questions combine ad spend with real outcomes: which campaigns bring profit, not only conversions. For that you need clean conversion data, ideally with profit as the value. Open Tracked's POAS Data Feed (Pro) sends profit to GA4 and Google Ads, and its analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit together. See profit on ad spend.

A realistic audit

An agency connects the read-only server to a client account and asks three questions: which campaigns spent over $300 last month with no conversions, which conversion actions have not recorded in 30 days, and which ad groups have disapproved ads. The answers come back in a minute. Two campaigns had broken landing pages, one conversion action was left over from an old tag, and three ads had been disapproved for a policy issue. The agency fixes each in the interface and records the changes. A manual audit would have taken a couple of hours. The assistant did not make decisions. It found things worth deciding on, and the humans acted.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Google Ads MCP server?

Yes. Google publishes an open-source, read-only, experimental MCP server for the Google Ads API.

What do I need to use it?

A developer token, OAuth credentials and a Google Cloud project.

Can it change my campaigns?

The initial version is read-only.

What should I ask it?

Audit questions: spend without conversions, disapproved ads, cost per conversion by campaign.

Can I trust the numbers?

They are as good as your conversion tracking. Verify in the interface.

Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?

No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.

Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?

No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source

Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
