Ad tag and click tag

An ad tag serves the ad and counts it. A click tag makes the ad's click go to the right address, through the tracking you want.

Key takeaways
  • An ad tag is code that asks an ad server for an ad and reports that it was shown (an impression).
  • A click tag is the setting that tells an ad, usually an HTML5 banner, where to send a click. In many ad servers it is the variable clickTag.
  • Third-party tags add tracking pixels and macros, so always test the final click path.

"Ad tag" and "click tag" are terms from the display advertising world, and they cause confusion in performance marketing because the words sound similar and the jobs differ. This page explains each, how they work together and how to test them. The details differ between ad platforms, so follow your platform's specification when you build creative. For the wider picture see ad tracking.

The ad tag

An ad tag is a snippet of code placed where an ad should appear. When the page loads, it asks an ad server for an ad, shows it and sends a signal that an impression happened. Tags come in several forms: JavaScript tags, iframe tags and tracking pixels. Ad servers and ad networks give you a tag for each placement.

The click tag

HTML5 banners are small web pages. They need to know where a click should go. Instead of hard-coding the address, many ad servers expect a variable called clickTag (or similar) that the server fills in at serve time with a tracked URL. The click then passes through the server, which counts it, and redirects to your landing page.

// HTML5 banner: use the variable the ad server provides
var clickTAG = "https://example.com"; // placeholder, replaced at serve time
document.getElementById("ad").onclick = function () { window.open(window.clickTAG); };

Platforms differ. Some use an API call instead of a variable, so read the creative specification of each platform you use.

How tracking is added

PieceJobNotes
Impression pixelCounts that the ad was shownAn image request, fired when the ad loads
Click redirectCounts the click and sends the visitor onA URL on the ad server
MacrosPlaceholders such as {campaign_id} that fill in valuesSyntax differs by platform

Orders from your store, back to the ad that earned them

Your store sends the order once. Open Tracked passes it on to each ad platform, cleaned and deduplicated.

Test before launch

1

Preview the creative

Use the platform's preview tool.

2

Click it

Check that the click goes to the right page.

3

Check the final URL

Look for UTMs and click IDs on the landing page.

4

Check impressions and clicks

In the platform and in your analytics, on a small test budget.

5

Check in a blocker

Some tags are blocked. Know what yours do.

Common problems

SymptomA click goes nowhere
Likely causeThe click variable is missing or has the wrong name.
FixFollow the platform's specification.
SymptomClicks count but visits do not
Likely causeA redirect drops parameters or the page loads too slowly.
FixCheck the redirect chain and the page speed.
SymptomUTMs disappear
Likely causeA redirect strips the query.
FixPreserve the query in redirects.
SymptomDouble counted clicks
Likely causeBoth the click tag and a landing page tag count.
FixCount in one place and reconcile.

For performance campaigns on Google, Meta or TikTok, you rarely handle ad tags directly. What matters instead is the landing page tracking and the server-side events that report the conversion. See conversion tracking.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ad tag?

Code that requests an ad from an ad server, shows it and counts the impression.

What is a click tag?

The setting, often a variable called clickTag, that tells an HTML5 ad where to send a click through the ad server's tracking.

Why do clicks not match visits?

Redirects, blockers, slow pages and double counting create gaps.

Do I need ad tags for Google or Meta ads?

Usually not. Those platforms host and serve the ads. You track the landing page and conversions.

How do I test an ad before launch?

Preview it, click it, check the final URL and verify impressions and clicks on a small budget.

Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?

No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.

Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?

No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source

Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
