Key takeaways
  • Return on sales = profit ÷ revenue, shown as a percentage. It is an accounting measure of margin.
  • It is not the same as ROAS (revenue ÷ ad spend), MER (total revenue ÷ total marketing spend) or POAS (profit ÷ ad spend).
  • Use ROS to see overall profitability, and ROAS, MER and POAS to judge marketing efficiency.

"ROS" appears in marketing pages and in finance reports, and it means different things to different people. Most often it is return on sales, an accounting ratio. Sometimes it is used loosely for return on spend. This page defines the accounting term, shows how it relates to the marketing ratios and explains which to use for what. See ROAS vs POAS, e-commerce KPIs and marketing spend optimisation.

The definition

Return on sales is operating profit divided by net sales, expressed as a percentage. It shows how much of each dollar of revenue remains after costs. A business with $1,000,000 of sales and $80,000 of operating profit has an ROS of 8 percent. It is also called operating margin.

The ratios side by side

RatioFormulaQuestion it answers
Return on sales (ROS)Operating profit ÷ net salesHow profitable is the business overall?
ROASRevenue from ads ÷ ad spendHow much revenue does each ad dollar bring?
MERTotal revenue ÷ total marketing spendHow efficient is all marketing together?
POASGross profit from ads ÷ ad spendDo ads pay for the product cost?
Gross margin(Revenue − cost of goods) ÷ revenueHow much is left after product cost?

A worked example

ItemAmount
Net sales$500,000
Cost of goods$250,000
Marketing spend$100,000
Other operating costs$110,000
Operating profit$40,000
ROS8 percent
Gross margin50 percent
MER5.0 ($500,000 ÷ $100,000)

The business has a healthy MER of 5.0, a decent gross margin and a thin ROS of 8 percent. The lesson is that marketing efficiency alone does not make a business profitable. Costs elsewhere matter.

How to use ROS

  • Track it monthly and quarterly to see the trend.
  • Compare it with your target margin and with similar businesses, carefully, since definitions vary.
  • When ROS falls while ROAS holds, look at costs outside advertising: shipping, returns, payment fees, staff.
  • Use it to set the budget ceiling: how much of revenue you can afford to spend on marketing and still reach your target ROS.

Frequently asked questions

What is return on sales?

Operating profit divided by net sales, as a percentage. It is also called operating margin.

Is ROS the same as ROAS?

No. ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend. ROS is profit divided by revenue.

What is a good ROS?

It depends on the industry and business model. Compare with your own history and similar businesses carefully.

How is ROS different from gross margin?

Gross margin only subtracts the cost of goods. ROS subtracts all operating costs.

Why does it matter to marketers?

It shows whether good ad efficiency turns into real profit.

Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?

No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.

Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?

No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source

Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
