In this guide
- A toolkit has four parts: debugging tools, templates, a test kit and checklists.
- Keep them in one place and update them after each project.
- Most of it is free.
Tracking projects repeat. A good toolkit turns each one into a shorter job. This page lists what to keep, with a note on what each is for. It collects ideas from the setup checklist, data validation techniques and Google Tag Manager best practices. Tool names are examples; use equivalents you prefer.
Debugging tools
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Tag Manager Preview (web and server) | See events, tags, variables and outgoing requests |
| Browser developer tools, Network tab | See what a page sends and what a blocker stops |
| Meta Test Events and Pixel Helper | Check Meta browser and server events |
| GA4 DebugView | Check GA4 events and parameters |
| Google Ads conversion diagnostics | Check conversion status |
| TikTok and Snapchat test event tools | Check those platforms |
curl or a REST client | Send test webhooks and check /healthy |
| A DNS lookup tool | Check tagging subdomain records |
Raw events in. Clean events out.
Open Tracked collects each event on your own domain, removes the noise and sends what is left to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok.
Templates to keep
- Data layer specification: event names, fields, types, example pushes.
- Tracking plan: questions, events, owners. See tagging strategy.
- Container template: web and server containers with your naming and consent settings. Open Tracked's Setup Wizard provides ready container files to start from.
- Client onboarding questionnaire: platforms, accounts, owners, consent tool.
- Handover note: one page per client. See the agency handbook.
- Monthly report template: one page.
A test kit
// hashing helper (Node.js)
const crypto = require("crypto");
const h = v => crypto.createHash("sha256").update(String(v).trim().toLowerCase()).digest("hex");
console.log(h(" [email protected] "));3 things to remember
Scroll and the points stack up.
A toolkit has four parts: debugging tools, templates, a test kit and checklists.

Keep them in one place and update them after each project.

Most of it is free.

Checklists
- Launch checklist. See the setup checklist.
- Post-launch checks. See the post-launch guide.
- Audit checklist. See Google Tag Manager audit and website tracking audit.
- Consent test: accept, reject, partial.
Habits
- Export the container before every big change.
- Write a version note on every publish.
- Test with a real order after each site change.
- Keep a change log.
A realistic example
A freelancer takes on her fourth tracking client in a month. Instead of starting from scratch, she opens her toolkit folder: the onboarding questionnaire, the container template with her naming and consent settings, the test checklist and the handover note. She sends the questionnaire, imports the template, fills in the platform IDs, runs the test checklist and writes the note from her template. A project that took ten hours the first time takes three. She also notices a gap in her checklist, the check for duplicate purchases after a thank-you page reload, and adds it. A toolkit is a living thing: each project should leave it a little better than it found it.

Frequently asked questions
What tools do I need for tracking work?
Tag Manager Preview, browser developer tools, platform test tools, a REST client and a DNS lookup tool.
What templates should I keep?
A data layer spec, tracking plan, container template, onboarding questionnaire, handover note and report template.
How do I hash e-mail for ad platforms?
Trim, lower-case and apply SHA-256.
Where do I get a starter container?
Open Tracked's Setup Wizard downloads ready web and server container files.
How often should I update the toolkit?
After every project.
Do I need spreadsheets to read my results?
No. Once tracking is live, the Open Tracked analytics shows spend, revenue, ROAS and profit, and you can ask Ari, the built-in AI assistant, questions about your own numbers in plain words. Ari's allowance depends on your analytics plan.
Is Open Tracked different from Open Track or Open Space Track?
No. Open Tracked is the official name of our server-side tracking platform, and the website is opentracked.io. Many people search for it as Open Track, OpenTrack or Open Space Track. All of them lead to the same product: server-side Google Tag Manager hosting, first-party analytics and a CRM pipeline.

Fix your tracking at the source
Open Tracked hosts your server-side Tag Manager, keeps first-party cookies alive and shows what each ad is really worth.
